Recipe Ingredients

Chocolate Cake Mix – You can use your favorite chocolate cake mix. You can either make it homemade or use a boxed cake mix. You will also need the additional ingredients on the box (eggs, oil, etc.).

Chocolate Frosting – We provided a recipe for a homemade chocolate frosting recipe in the recipe card below but if you’d rather make it easier, you can use store-bought chocolate frosting.

Oreo Cookies – You will need to remove the creme from the cookies. You can also purchase just the Oreo baking crumbs if you prefer.

Gummy Worms – You can use any of your favorite gummy worms. I tend to like the Albanese Gummy Worms but any will do.

Helpful Tips

  • Keep the frosting away from any heat source or it will melt.
  • If you do choose to refrigerate the cupcakes prior to serving, I would wait to add the gummy worm until right before serving. Otherwise, it will be hard to chew.
  • You can bake the cupcakes ahead of time and then frost and decorate the cupcakes right before serving.

Storage Information

  • Store leftover cupcakes in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. Keep away from any moisture.

How to Make Dirt Cupcakes with Gummy Worms

Step One: Prepare the cupcake mixture, but combine the instant pudding mix with the cake mix. Follow the directions from the box, and bake according to those directions (or according to your homemade chocolate cupcake recipe). Be careful not to over-fill the cupcakes, 1/2-2/3 full at the most. This batter is thick, it can help to tap the cupcake pan on the counter to even out the batter inside the cups.

Step Two: Once the cupcakes are baked, allow to cool completely before frosting.

Step Three: Make your frosting and then pipe onto the top of the cooled cupcakes using a piping bag and piping tip of your choosing.

Step Four: Sprinkle Oreo crumbs over the top of each cupcake and then top with a gummy worm.

Step Five: Serve and Enjoy!
