How to Make Old Fashioned Jelly Nougat

If you grew up with grandparents in your life, you probably have one sweet or candy that reminds you of your grandparents every time you see or eat it.

For me, I remember my great-grandmother always making homemade jelly nougat candy (also known as gumdrop nougat candy).

It’s a colorful, sweet and delicious candy that is chewy and the perfect sweet to satisfy any sweet tooth.

It is so easy to make and even easier to eat!

Notes:

  •  You can store this in the fridge, in a covered container, for up to 1 week. Store on the counter, in a sealed container, for up to 3 days. I do not suggest freezing.
  • It takes about a box and a half of the candy Dots to make this recipe. Count the extra candy leftover as a treat for the chef.
  • You can use just red and green Dots candy to make this even more festive for the holidays. The classic version had all the colors, so I tend to go that route.
  • If your chocolate is too thick by the time the marshmallows have melted, you can return it to the microwave for 30 seconds before adding it to the marshmallow mix.

Ingredients

  • 10 Ounces Dots Candy
  • 1 Bag Mini Marshmallows 10 ounces
  • 2 Tablespoons Unsalted Butter
  • 1 ¾ Cup White Chocolate Chips

Instructions

  • Line an 8×8 pan with parchment paper and set aside.
  • Add the white chocolate chips to a small, microwave-safe bowl and microwave on high for 2 Minutes and 30 seconds, pausing every 30 seconds to stir the chocolate chips so they don’t overheat.
  • Once the chocolate is smooth and creamy, set aside.
  • Quickly, add the marshmallows and butter to a medium mixing bowl and microwave on high for 2 minutes or until the marshmallows have risen to the top of the bowl.
  • Remove from the microwave and stir until the butter has fully melted and the marshmallows are smooth.
  • Move quickly, add the chocolate to the marshmallow mixture and stir well (but fast).
  • Add all but ⅓ cup of the Dots candy to the bowl and stir to evenly distribute it throughout the mixture.
  • Immediately pour into the prepared pan.
  • Spray hands with cooking spray and spread the mixture out evenly in the pan.
  • Press the remaining Dots candy into the top of the nougat, filling in any spots that need more color.
  • Let rest for 4 hours, covered, on the counter, or until fully set. If it’s still too tackey, pop it in the fridge for an hour.
  • Once set, cut into small squares (the size is up to you) and enjoy!
